Bowie and I recorded songs together, but David lost them all. Now he’s gone, I will never ever find them

  • Scottish singer Lulu opens up about her relationship with the Thin White Duke

She has spoken about her passionate affair with David Bowie in the 1970s and how she was mesmerized by the iconic pop pioneer.

Their relationship may have been short-lived, but Scottish singer Lulu described it as ‘amazing’ and opened up about how sexual chemistry brought them together.

But the 75-year-old has now opened up about how music united them too – and revealed there is a cache of lost songs recorded during their time together.

But the songs have never been heard and no one knows where they are.

Lulu said, “It doesn’t look like we’ll ever find them. Isn’t that annoying? He said he was going to find them, but he never thought of them, and now he’s gone.”

The Ziggy Stardust singer passed away in 2016, two days after the release of his 26th and final studio album, Blackstar.

Even now, Lulu still performs her cover of his song The Man Who Sold the World.

In 2017, she released her autobiography, I Don’t Want To Fight, in which she discussed their relationship.

But she admitted: ‘I should never have written an autobiography, I think at 75 I may be more vulnerable than ever before.

‘I always wanted to be Miss Perfect. And my mother always said that smiling costs nothing. So that’s what I’ve always done. Being vulnerable means being very real. And I think I’ve avoided that. I don’t let everyone in.’

Reflecting on their relationship, Lulu told Telegraph Magazine that Bowie’s drug-heavy lifestyle drove her away.

She left him for celebrity hairstylist John Frieda, whom she married in 1976 and had her son Jordan before splitting in 1991.

Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Glasgow, Lulu burst onto the music scene in 1964 at the age of 15 with her hit Shout, when John Lennon and Paul McCartney named it as their favorite record of the week.

She was appointed OBE in 2000 and was upgraded to CBE in 2021. Midway through the pandemic, Lulu was unable to receive the honor from a member of the royal family.

But she had met the current king in his capacity as Prince of Wales in 2000.

She said: ‘In a strange way I have felt connected to him all my life. We were born in the same month of the same year. When we met, he was all Prince Charming.”

Lulu is now preparing for Glastonbury, where she will perform for the final time after announcing her retirement from touring.

Her set includes Shout, although she joked, “I thought I was going to leave it out!”

‘No, the most important thing is to go to Glastonbury and give them what they want. That song is a part of me. You give them that part of you. They are happy and you are happy that they are.

‘It’s an exchange. Making people happy, that’s what I do. It’s what I get for doing it. I love it, I’m looking forward to it. How lucky are we when we are involved in music?’
