One person was killed and about a dozen passengers were injured, at least one seriously, when a tour bus traveling from Montreal rolled over on an upstate New York highway near Lake George on Friday, officials said.

The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m., when a Skyway Coach Lines bus went off the road between exits 22 and 23 on Interstate 87, New York State Police said in a statement. There were 23 people on board, including the driver.

In addition to the death, one passenger had serious injuries and 10 injuries that were not life-threatening, the statement said. A state police spokeswoman said separately that one passenger was transported to Albany Medical Center in critical condition.

A spokesperson for Glens Falls Hospital said 12 people with minor injuries had been taken there for treatment.

A section of the highway where the bus rolled over was closed to traffic while emergency workers responded to the crash and would remain so for some time, officials said.

“I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of all involved in this horrific incident,” Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

It is not immediately clear what caused the bus to overturn. Police said this was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

In its statement, state police asked for the help of anyone who may have witnessed the crash, seen the bus before it overturned or recorded dashboard camera footage of the episode.
