Cancer-stricken grandfather says 'really bad' wedding DJ who urinated on him as a joke is a 'filthy animal' who should have been jailed for at least six months

A cancer-stricken grandfather has branded the man who urinated on him as a prank as a 'filthy animal'.

Peter Barton, 72, said the court was too lenient on part-time wedding DJ Leigh Brookfield, who was jailed for 14 weeks.

Retired builder Barton said: 'He should have been given at least six months. It was such a horrible thing to do, inhumane and truly evil.”

The two men had never met before, but found themselves next to each other in the toilets of a squash club on Boxing Day.

Mr Barton had difficulty urinating and said out of shame that he was suffering from prostate cancer.

Brookfield, 40, said “Sorry to hear that” before urinating on Mr Barton's back, filming the sick stunt on his mobile phone.

The pensioner didn't realize what had happened and was stunned when Brookfield later asked him to smile for his phone camera as he stood at the bar.

Mr Barton said: 'He said to me, 'I've seen you twice now, I didn't know what he was talking about.

'The next morning the chairman of the squash club knocked on my door at 8am to tell me what had happened. I was disgusted.'

By then, hundreds of people in Llanelli, west Wales, had seen Brookfield's Snapchat video of him urinating on the sick widower.

Mr Barton, who lost his wife Delyth eight years ago, said: 'Later the police came and asked if I had the clothes I was wearing.

'I had put them in the machine, but I had run out of washing powder so I hadn't turned it on.

“It was lucky, they were able to take the clothes as evidence.”

Brookfield was arrested and appeared at Llanelli Magistrates Court this week, where he admitted a charge of common assault.

He apologized for his disgusting behavior and was ordered to pay his victim £500 in compensation before being led to the cells.

Father-of-two Mr Barton said: 'I'm glad he went to prison but 14 weeks isn't long enough for him.

“I'm sure a few people in prison will teach him a lesson when they find out what he did.”

“I have enough problems right now without having to tolerate such despicable behavior from people like him.”

Mr Barton was diagnosed with prostate cancer three months ago and is undergoing tests to determine his long-term prognosis.

He had good news this week when a scan showed the cancer had not spread to his bones.

The pensioner is looking forward to going back to Llanelli Tennis and Squash Club, where he will have a pint with his friends while watching rugby on TV.

He added: 'I'm going for the company, there are some nice people there who are interested in me and my health problems.

'But then a dirty animal like him comes in and ruins it.

'I've never seen the idiot before, but I know his father. He's a nice guy, we're about the same age. I wonder what he thinks?

'I have to be honest: it has damaged my dignity. I don't want the whole town to know that I'm the guy who got urinated on like that.'

Dad-of-one Brookfield will miss the birth of his new baby as he will still be confused when it arrives next month.

His partner was in tears in the public gallery as judge Mark Layton said the DJ 'mocked' a vulnerable man and filmed it as a prank.

Since the incident, there has been strong support for Mr Barton within the local community. A fundraising campaign has already raised £590, almost six times more than the original target.

Mr Barton said he had received a knitted scarf, a selection of jams, marmalades and other gifts since his Boxing Day ordeal.

He said: 'People have been very kind, they know I live on my own and want to cheer me up after what happened.'

Mr Barton has big plans for the £500 compensation Brookfield must pay him as part of his sentence.

He said: 'I will use it to visit my granddaughter who lives in Belgium. Now that my wife is gone, she is my favorite person everywhere. I'd like to go see her.'
