Celeste McGain: Public appeal to find mum who vanished from the Whitsundays regions without a trace

A missing mother-of-three was in ‘good spirits’ before mysteriously disappearing almost three weeks ago.

Celeste McGain, 40, was last seen at a Woodwark home near Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays region of North Queensland at around 2pm on May 25.

Three months earlier, she moved from northern NSW to live with her three sons, aged 18 to 25, and was said to be in “good spirits” when last seen by loved ones.

Ms McGain left behind personal belongings, including her phone and bank card, on the day she disappeared.

She was reported missing on June 1 after her concerned family tried unsuccessfully for a week to contact her and determine her whereabouts.

Queensland Police launched a public appeal on Wednesday.

Although Ms McGain’s disappearance is not being treated as suspicious at this time, there are growing concerns for her welfare.

“Given that Celeste has not had any communication with family members, that raises clear welfare issues because it comes from the nature of the case,” Detective Sergeant Georgie Carland said.

“We are concerned about Celeste’s access to basic needs [including] food, water…regarding her well-being.”

‘Celeste has a relatively private lifestyle and has been known to travel without informing family members, which poses challenges.

Acting Sergeant Carland made a desperate appeal to Mrs McGain on behalf of her sister Kate.

“We ask that as you watch this Celeste, that you reach out to your family in whatever way you feel comfortable,” she said.

“I recently spoke to your sister Kate and she described the type of person you are as very kind and outgoing.”

“She’s very worried, just like your sons.”

Police have launched a desperate appeal to locate Ms McGain and have urged anyone with information to come forward.

Ms McGain is described as white, 175cm tall, with brown eyes and brown curly hair.

She was last seen wearing a blue skirt and white shirt.

Ms McGain was also seen on May 7 at an employment agency in Cannonvale, a five-minute drive from Airlie Beach.

She is not believed to have traveled from the Woodwark estate in a motor vehicle as she does not own a car.

“We urge anyone who knows Celeste or who may have had recent contact with Celeste, or any form of association with her, to contact police,” Detective Sergeant Carland said.

“Our focus is on anyone outside of Celeste’s immediate family who may be able to provide police with further investigative opportunities to assist in locating her whereabouts,”

There is also no record of her taking a flight to leave the region.

Residents living in Paluma Road and the surrounding area have been urged to check their CCTV or dashcam footage from May 24.

Anyone with information about Ms McGain’s disappearance is urged to call Policelink on 131444 or Crime Stoppers.
