Being greeted at the front door by unpleasant odors is never a pleasant welcome home.

But you don’t have to buy expensive room fresheners or fancy reed diffusers to give your space a wonderful scent.

Here are cheap and easy tricks to keep your pads smelling fresh. . .

COFFEE BREAK: Coffee grounds are ideal for neutralizing unpleasant odors.

It can really help if you have a particularly tough, lingering odor, such as from pet urine or vomit.

You can dehydrate old soils by spreading them on baking paper and cooking at a low temperature until they are dry.

Then leave the bowl as close to the source of the offending odor as possible.

SODIUM CARBONATE: Pet, cooking and other household odors can leach into fabrics and leave unpleasant odors.

Instead of masking the smell, you can tackle the source with baking soda. It neutralizes the odors and at B&Q you can buy a large pack for €2.50.

Sprinkle the baking soda over smelly carpets and let it sit for at least an hour, and ideally up to 24 hours, before vacuuming.

You can also put a little of the product in an open jar and store it in food cupboards to help prevent odors.

BED WASH: If you have a pet, be sure to machine wash the bed regularly, as hair and bacteria build up, causing the unpleasant “dog odor” that can creep into your home.

FREEZE: Food waste bins can cause a stench of old food and rotting produce.

Instead of keeping a bin, try placing a compostable bag in the freezer and scraping food into it.

Freezing food immediately will stop the smell.

And you can take the bag out as usual before picking it up.

Just be a little extra careful because sometimes frozen food becomes sharp and pokes a hole in the lining.
