Coventry City is just the newest club in English to pick the benefits of a sleep expert because they strive for marginal profits at elite level.
And “The Sleep Geek” James Wilson admits that it is “Bonkers” that Premier League parties who want to win titles are still reluctant to fully embrace his unique and successful methods.
Wilson has built up a healthy reputation in the world of football, so that players and coaching staff perfect the art of sleeping and recovering at Rotherham United, Sheffield United, Lincoln City, West ham And now Coventry.
His influence is significant and seems to have the Golden Touch, involved in promotion success stories with Rotherham, Lincoln and Sheffield United, while also playing his role in West Ham’s Europa Conference League Triumph of 2023.
Frank Lampard’s Coventry is the newest club on Wilson’s list of distinctions, the Sky Blues that arrive within a few seconds after the play-off final of the championship, only to admit Sunderland in the semi-final in the injury time.
Wilson’s knowledge in the sleeping field has also worked with F1, NBA and NFL stars and is currently seeing him approached by top football players in the Prem and the EFL.
But apart from Brentford who has sleep coach Anna West in their ranks, Wilson’s dream is that his field will be taken more seriously by the largest clubs in the country still on deaf ears.

Wilson said to Sunsport: “It’s Konkers for me, really. There is me and Anna and that’s it.
“I am not to make the decisions, but she doesn’t think it is as important? Is it that they feel that they already have the source internally?
“One of my worries is that you see more and more clubs working with brands that have a connection to sleep, perhaps as a sleeping supplement company or a piece of sleeping technology.
“That is not sleep advice. It is now worse than when I started, because those pieces of technology are so inaccurate. They lead a sense of fear and despair in players.
“It needs people who are well trained. Part of the advice of members of the medical team does not come from reliable sources, such as Jake Humphrey and Steven Bartlett Podcasts, who can be disturbing. And even if the stuff is correct, it is not suitable for that person.
“We have at a point that taking along with you that you can disrupt a commercial brand that pays for that relationship. I don’t understand why every club has not received [a sleep coach].
“You may not get that much commercial advantage, but you will get a team in the play-offs. You are promoted. You are going to win European trophies.
“That is what happens when you get the right sleep expertise. People who are responsible for performance and well -being must have a kind of good sleeping knowledge.
“You can see how well Bentford did, right? You can see how good Rotherham did when I was there, Sheffield United, West Ham, Coventry.
“It’s not difficult, right? If clubs invest well, it really works.”
Wilson started working with Coventry at the end of last season and gave the team advice on how they can prepare for their FA Cup Semi-final Manchester United – one that they have painfully lost on penalties under former boss Mark Robins.
Wilson explained: “We did this little tweak before the United game, where we suggested watching the other semi-final with Manchester City the day before, may not be best to prepare for sleep before you play.”
Wilson treated players who struggled with sleep paralysis at other clubs. Parasomnia patient Richard Wood would go asleep and head balls in his sleep, but the career of the former Rotherham defender was extended with the help of Wilson.
Wilson is now also sponsoring his local non-League side Nostell Miners Welfare from Wakefield in the Northern Counties East League.
It is undecided whether Wilson will continue to work with Coventry next season, but he is highly appreciated by performance director Claire Marie and head of sports science Adam Hearn and collaborated with sports psychologists.
Wilson continued: “The culture in Coventry was really good – they did a lot to the players and supported them emotionally. Frank was really open for what we were doing.
“I started with a few seminars. I entered every four or five weeks from the preseason until February and I was then available from that moment for players who needed it.
“It’s not hip. It’s not Wham-Bam, thank you Madam. They are conversations.
“You can see improvements within about three months. Give them the simple signs behind sleep and a concept of themselves. You have to drop your heart rate, drop your core temperature.
“We have followed a course on sleeping position. It is scary how little a professional football player spends on a mattress.
“You will earn more money if you do this stuff because you get a longer career.”
