Cyclist allegedly hit by P-Plater while out training for a race tragically dies in hospital as driver is charged

A competitive cyclist who was allegedly hit by a P-Plater on Tuesday died in hospital and the driver has been charged with negligent driving causing death.

Nick Sky, 47, underwent surgery for a traumatic brain injury suffered in the horrific crash on Sydney’s northern beaches, but he died on Thursday.

He and his friend Michael Collings, 56, were seriously injured in the incident after they were allegedly hit by a car driven by a 24-year-old on Forest Way in Belrose at around 6.10am.

Mr Sky was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition, while Mr Collings was taken to the same hospital with serious injuries.

The P-Plater was unharmed and underwent mandatory tests at a hospital before being taken to Manly police station.

He was charged with negligent driving (sometimes causing serious bodily harm) and causing bodily harm by misconduct while operating a motor vehicle.

He has since been charged with an additional offense of negligent driving causing death.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Manly Local Court on July 24.

Mr Sky and Mr Collings, both from Sydney’s north shore, were on their regular training for Masters races later this year.

The crash left their bikes mangled on the side of the road, with Mr Collings suffering multiple fractures and a dislocated shoulder.

Mr Sky’s son Lachlan, who is also a competitive cyclist, was cycling to work when he received the devastating news about his father and arrived at the scene looking visibly shocked and distraught.

Local man Rob Arnold said there was ‘quite a lot of debris on the road’.

“And I just saw the vehicle that appears to be involved, and it doesn’t look good. It’s really disturbing,” he said.

The Subaru station wagon involved had serious windshield damage as a result of the collision.
