Cynthia Nixon Hints ‘SATC’ Cast walked ‘On Eggshells’ for Kim Cattrall

Cynthia Nixon detail the ways And just like that different from filming Sex and the city‘s original run – and hinted at that Kim Cattrall‘s absence has changed things for the better.

“This isn’t really something we’re talking about,” the 57-year-old Emmy winner said Vanity Fair on Thursday 15 June to the question whether ‘the dynamics’ were different AJLT without Cattrall, 66. “Yeah, it felt very different. It also felt very different because we have these new great characters, and we’re older and our fictional kids are now mostly adults. Many things felt different.”

The former gubernatorial nominee didn’t name her former costar, but she suggested the cast is happier now as they’re all excited to be a part of the revival series.

“The main thing that felt so great was that everyone who was there really wanted to be there. That’s just the bottom line,” Nixon explained. “We all love each other, we love our show, we wanted to do more of it. And we all wanted to be there. So that makes a huge difference, that you don’t walk on eggshells with someone who is unhappy for reasons that are hard to understand.”

Cattrall, who played PR pundit Samantha Jones throughout SATC‘s original run and in the two films, did not return for AJLTwhich premiered in December 2021. She also refused to participate in a third SATC movie.

Both Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parkerwho plays Carrie Bradshaw have said that the Mannequin actress was never asked to reprise her role AJLT.

“We didn’t ask her to be a part of this because she made it clear that wasn’t something she wanted to pursue, and it no longer felt comfortable for us, so it didn’t cross our mind,” said the Parting alum, 58, shared The Hollywood Reporter in June 2022. “You have to listen to someone, and if they talk about something in public and it doesn’t suggest it’s somewhere they want to be, or a person they want to play, or an environment they want to be in, come you at an age where you think, ‘Well, we hear that.’”

However, news broke last month that Cattrall will appear on AJLT after all, albeit in a small cameo during the season 2 finale Varietythe How I met your father star had no interaction with Parker or showrunner Michael Patrick King during the scene, which allegedly shows a phone call between Carrie and Samantha.

If AJLT viewers know that Samantha is very much alive and well in the world of the show, but she now lives in London and has a distant relationship with Carrie, Miranda (Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis). In Season 1, there were several scenes where Carrie texted Samantha, but Cattrall never appeared on screen.

Last year, Cattrall used the word “weird” to describe Samantha’s arc AJLT. “I don’t know how to feel about that. It’s so finite for me, so it’s off,” she shared Variety in May 2022. “This feels like an echo from the past. Aside from the really great feeling of — it’s rare in my business — that people want more, especially at age 65. That feels powerful, that I left behind something that I am so proud of. I loved her. I loved her so, so, so much.”
