Derek Hough said he felt some “relief” when he shared an update a week after his wife Hayley Erbertemergency brain surgery.
“As you all know, this past week has been a challenging journey for us due to a life-threatening event that suddenly entered our lives,” the Dancing With the Stars judge, 38, captioned a video via Instagram on Friday, December 15. , which showed him walking through Washington DC with Erbert, who was wearing a helmet. “It was a time full of uncertainty and fear – from achieving our dreams on stage to a nightmare in the blink of an eye. But today we are filled with hope and relief as we share an update with you.”
Erbert, 29, is doing “well” after the incident, but Hough noted that her recovery has been “nothing short of a miracle.”
During a December 6 performance of Hough’s “A Symphony of Dance” in Washington, D.C., Erbert was hospitalized after feeling disoriented. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma and underwent emergency craniectomy.
Hough explained that his wife, whom he married on August 26, “still has a long way to go” in her recovery. She will undergo another operation “to insert a cranial implant to replace the piece removed during the craniectomy,” with Hough explaining, “It will restore the skull to its natural shape and protect the brain from injury.”
The choreographer then thanked fans for the “incredible support” and shouted out Erbert’s top-notch medical team.
“It is a profound reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly things can change,” Hough wrote. “But it has also shown us the incredible strength and resilience that lies within us, and the power of having a supportive community around us.”
While it won’t be the holidays the couple “envisioned,” they remain “grateful,” with Hough adding, “We look forward to cherishing these moments with a deeper appreciation for life and the people in it.” ‘
