The Mexican club published a statement on Facebook paying tribute to the attacker.

It read: “It is with deep sadness that we inform the entire FC Juárez community that our player Diego 'El Puma' Chávez passed away in a car accident early this morning, February 14.

“During his time at FC Juárez, El Puma was characterized by his joy, enthusiasm, simplicity and willingness, as well as his spirit of dedication and love for our colors.”

Chavez, nicknamed 'The Puma', played 46 games for Juarez, scoring three times.

The Mexican first division side signed the goalkeeper in February last year after a spell in Peru with Carlos A. Manucci.

Fans are heartbroken by the news, with many taking to social media to pay tribute to Chavez.

One wrote: “Rest in peace Puma and may the light always shine on you!”

A second added: “Rest in peace Puma, you always played every match with great energy. Always Bravo!”

A third wrote: “Rest in peace Puma. Thank you for your dedication, your passion and your love for this team!”

And a fourth commented: “What a great shame. He was a player who defended our shirt with great pride. Rest in peace dear Diego.”

Reports have suggested that Chavez was trapped in his car after he lost control and crashed into a sign.

FC Juarez will face Club Puebla in the competition on Saturday and it is not yet known whether the match will still go ahead.
