Rhodes coroner Despina Nethena’s initial post-mortem examination found there was no third party involvement and no ‘criminal’ element – but a definitive cause of death has yet to be determined.

Dimos Kotsidaras, police commander of Symi, said: “It appears that the cause of death was heat exhaustion after walking in high temperatures from Sinterklaas to Agia Marina.”

Police and the coroner are also examining footage from the restaurant, seen by MailOnline, which shows Dr. Mosley wandered around in a confused state for 20 minutes before collapsing last Wednesday.

The temperature at the time was 40 degrees Celsius and the excessive heat is believed to have played a role in his death.

In the video, he appears to pause at the perimeter wall, resting a hand on it, before losing his balance and disappearing from view.

The Symi Crisis Rescue Volunteer Team posted a condolence message to Dr. Michael Mosley’s wife, children, relatives and friends for their “tragic loss.”

It said: ‘Our team was called in by the island authorities to assist in the search investigation on the very first night of his disappearance and we immediately began an initial overnight search.

‘In the coming days we continued to participate in the investigations together with firefighters, police officers and other volunteers, as always under the direction of the head of the investigation.

“High temperatures and rough patches made this mission extremely difficult, and unfortunately the outcome was one we are all familiar with.”

The day before, a search and rescue helicopter circled above the scene.

Ilias Tsavaris, 38, said he was alerted by the restaurant’s owners who received a call from the mayor of Symi.

‘The mayor had seen something special from a water taxi and I was told to go there and see it. As I got closer, I saw something glinting in the sun: his watch. As I got closer, I knew it was him. Awful.’

CCTV footage from the restaurant shows a customer, who may have heard a cry for help, walking near where Dr Mosley lay.

Sources said Dr Mosley’s wife was not expected to arrive at the scene but was likely to return to Britain from Rhodes, an hour’s boat ride from Symi.

Police sources ruled out foul play but said it was not possible at this stage to determine how he died.

A coroner’s spokesman said: ‘It appears it was a fall but we need to establish whether he had a medical episode before that and that will take time.’

His wife Dr Clare Bailey had seen him off after they spent the morning with friends on the idyllic beach after arriving the day before for a week’s holiday.

The father of four children, Dr. Mosley, left with a single bottle of water but crucially no phone, saying he was heading to the three-bedroom Merchant House apartment in Symi where they were staying with friends.
