Driver crashes on Manhattan sidewalk, injuring several people

Several people were injured early Monday morning in Midtown Manhattan when a black sedan crashed onto the sidewalk and struck police cars and a food truck, New York City police said.

A woman trapped under the food cart and several other people were taken to local hospitals, a police spokesman said, adding that the woman was in stable condition and the others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash also injured three police officers, two refused medical attention and one was treated for minor injuries, although the exact number of injured was unclear.

The driver of the car, a 44-year-old man, who has not been publicly identified, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after what police said was “reckless driving.”

Police officers had approached the sedan near West 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue in an attempt to intervene in a “dispute regarding the car,” the spokesperson said. The driver then attempted to flee and drove away before hitting the police cars and food truck at a high rate of speed near West 34th Street around 1:30 a.m.

As of Monday, a report was pending against the driver.

Police had a heavier than normal New Year’s Eve presence in Manhattan, with huge crowds attending the festivities, but the area where the crash occurred was not near the annual ball drop and was not cordoned off, police said.
