A GOALKEEPER who once challenged Erik ten Hag has swapped crossbeams for prison beams – by becoming a PRISON GUARD.

Leonard Nienhuis played 98 Dutch top matches for SC Cambuur in the Eredivisie.

Five years ago he hung up his boots and the 33-year-old even played against Ten Hag.

That was during the time when the Manchester United manager was in charge of Go Ahead Eagles.

Nienhuis has since caused a shock by going to work in the tough prison of Veenhuizen in the Netherlands.

And he may still have to lock up former opponent Quincy Promes when the troubled winger returns to the Netherlands.

Now working for Spartak Moscow, Promes has been given a six-year prison sentence for drug smuggling, plus another 18 months for wounding his cousin.

Dutch authorities are currently trying to bring the 32-year-old back from Russia to serve his sentence.

Nienhuis said The Telegraph: “If Promes is sent to Veenhuizen, he is just a prisoner to me.

“He doesn't have to wear orange overalls and he is treated fairly.

“I met him for Cambuur in 2012/2013, when he played up front for Go Ahead Eagles. Erik ten Hag was their coach at the time.

“In any case, Promes knows that I won't get past it easily!”

Nienhuis adds: “You think about your future while you are still playing football. My father-in-law worked in a prison.

“I received training there and agreed with the team leader to take on a permanent job.

“I wanted to return to normal society and spend more time with my family.

“After I left Cambuur I was number 2 goalkeeper at Sparta Rotterdam, but there was little interest in me from other clubs.

“NEC Nijmegen came to see me in October, but we could not agree on the conditions.”
