Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn made their first public outing together in eight months on Monday when they went for dinner in London’s Mayfair.

The couple – who tied the knot in 2019 – have always kept their relationship low-key, but Ed, 32, sparked concerns among fans when he hinted at marital problems in his latest album.

Released in September, Autumn Variations seemed to suggest their relationship was on the rocks at some point, with one song hinting that 31-year-old Cherry “may have spent time on their relationship.”

During their date night, Ed and Cherry looked cheerful but kept their distance, with the Grammy-winning artist reserving his hugs for passersby on the street.

He later took to Instagram to share a photo from their dinner, throwing his middle figure at the camera as he enjoyed a glass of red wine.

Ed was dressed casually during the outing in a sheepskin-lined jacket that he wore over a red sweater and paired with black jeans.

Cherry also kept it simple in denim, pairing wide jeans with a jacket over a green shirt.

It was the first time the pair had been seen together in public since celebrating Cherry’s birthday at Ed’s own restaurant Bertie Blossoms in Notting Hill in April.

The outing came after he hinted at marital problems in his seventh album.

Ed’s song Punchline focused on an imploding romance, with the lyrics, “I can’t help but be destructive now.” It’s been weeks since I saw your sketch.

‘In my room there is a silence so loud. This is what losing hope might sound like.”

During the emotional chorus, it continued, “I can’t help it but I love you so. I can’t bear this letting go. I still feel like we can work it out or something.

‘All I am is just flesh and bones. Why is your heart so cold?’

Ed and Cherry have been together since 2015 and are parents to daughters Jupiter, 17 months, and Lyra, two.

In another song, Ed described their “bumpy road” and emphasized in the song that this is “not the end of our lives.”

He sings, “This isn’t the end of our lives, this is just a bump in the ride. I know it’s going to be okay.’

In the song The Day I Was Born he sings: ‘I split from my love a few months ago, if they were here I wouldn’t be alone.’

However, it is unclear which songs were written based on Ed’s personal experiences, as he has previously said that the album is about both his and his friend’s lives.

Ed and Cherry first met at the age of 11 while attending Thomas Mills High School in rural Suffolk.

Cherry stood out in the year under him because of her natural skills in hockey and Ed because of his obvious musical talent.

While the couple broke up after high school, they reconnected in New York City in 2015 and started dating shortly after.

The key to the relationship’s success seems to be their humble roots in Suffolk.

Cherry grew up in a charming historic house in a village outside Framlingham with her mother Ann, father Matthew, an architect, and younger brother. Charlie is in the same profession as his future brother-in-law and writes film and theater music.

Meanwhile, Ed lived with mum and dad, Imogen and John, and brother Matthew, in Framlingham, but left school at 16 to seek his fortune as a singer. At first he was a busker and slept rough under an arch near Buckingham Palace.

Two years after they started dating, Ed proposed to Cherry in 2017.

He delivered the happy news to his then 19 million followers on Instagram with a sweet, again peaceful photo of them embracing.

He wrote: ‘I got a fiancé just before New Year’s. We are very happy and in love, and our cats (Dorito and Calippo) are happy too.’

The following year, the couple tied the knot in a low-key ceremony just days before Christmas.

A source said: It was very quiet – just Ed’s oldest school friends, limited family and the priest.

‘There were only forty people, so no Taylor Swift, record company executives, royals or pop stars. He didn’t want any fuss and he wanted it to be something completely for them – just a little winter wedding.

‘Neither of them were too concerned to make a big deal about it. Cherry just wanted to get it out of the way, without any problems or intrusions.”

Although the pair haven’t been photographed together since April, Cherry played a major role in Ed’s Disney+ documentary, which premiered on May 3.

The series followed Ed after he learned of life-changing news, revealing his hardships and triumphs during the most challenging period of his life.

Combining a never-before-seen personal archive, interviews with his wife and loved ones, and intimate performances, the series broadened the lens to explore what Ed thinks about the world, himself, and his music.

Much of the program was dedicated to his wife’s health issues and how she helped Ed as he struggled with his mental health issues.

The singer, 32, suffered a traumatic 12 months last year when his best friend Jamal Edwards died and Cherry was diagnosed with a tumor while she was pregnant with their second child.

The couple welcomed daughter Jupiter in May 2022 after keeping the pregnancy secret, but he later revealed that the couple had been plagued by “anxiety, depression and anxiety” as Cherry was diagnosed with a tumor that she had only been able to treat after giving birth.

In an Instagram post, the star explained that he struggled with his mental health last year as he tried to cope with his wife’s health issues and mourned the loss of Jamal.

Ed announced the release of his sixth studio album, Subtract, in the post, explaining that it was inspired by the personal tragedies he had faced.

He wrote: ‘I had been working on Subtract for ten years, trying to create the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be.

‘In early 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health and ultimately the way I viewed music and art.

‘Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me understand my feelings. I wrote without thinking about what the songs would be, I just wrote what came out. And in just over a week, I replaced ten years of work with my deepest, darkest thoughts.

‘Within a month, my pregnant wife was told that she had a tumor, for which treatment was only possible after birth.

“My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly, and I found myself in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter.

“I was circling through fear, depression and anxiety. I felt like I was drowning, with my head below the surface, looking up but unable to break through for air.

“As an artist, I didn’t feel like I could credibly put a body of work out into the world that didn’t accurately reflect where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life.

‘This album is just that. It opens the hatch to my soul. For the first time, I’m not trying to make an album that people will like, I’m just putting out something that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life.

‘This is the diary entry from last February and my way of making sense of it. This is Subtraction.’

The singer provided no further updates on his wife’s health.
