Elisabeth Moss skips Emmy Awards, loses to Succession's Sarah Snook

Elizabeth Mos did not join her fellow nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

Moss, 47, was absent from the awards ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, January 15. Her fellow nominees included Sharon Horgan (Bad sisters), Melanie Lynskey (Yellow jackets), Bella Ramsey (The last of us), Keri Russell (The diplomat) And Sara Snoek (Succession), the latter of whom took home the title.

Moss has a total of 15 Emmy nominations and two wins, having previously been recognized 10 times as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her respective roles in The Handmaid's Tale, Crazy man And Top of the lake. She won the trophy in 2017 after the first season of The Handmaid's Tale.

“You are brave and strong and smart,” Moss said, thanking her mother, whom she brought along as a date, in her speech. “You taught me that you can be kind and freaking badass.”

The Handmaid's Tale is adapted from the author Margaret Atwood's bestselling dystopian novel of the same name. Like the 1985 book, the Hulu series follows June and countless other women in a futuristic version of the United States after their rights are taken away. June was forced to become a handmaiden and help the leaders' families have children as the country's birth rate fell.

June eventually fled the heavily guarded country in season 4, but has since worked to help free other captured Handmaids. The Handmaid's Tale also stars OT Fagbenle, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Max Minghella And Bradley Whitford.

“I work from a book and universe created by Margaret Atwood. There are some real endings, things that I think are good moments,” show creator Bruce Miller previously said We weekly in 2019 about the show's endgame. 'Do I have a goal in mind? Season 5 aired in 2022, shortly before a sixth and final season was greenlit.

While few details about the new episodes have been shared publicly, Miller did draw inspiration from Atwood's follow-up The Testaments. (Atwood's sequel was released in 2019 and is set 15 years later.)

“It's so nice to have a book again,” Miller said Deadline in 2022. “I think the people who watch the TV show should be comfortable with the fact that it's just HandmaidI didn't follow the book The Testaments is a sequel to this TV program. So I don't necessarily shoot those things as they are The Testaments but everyone grows in those directions. Margaret [Atwood] and I had a lot of conversations about the character [of June]. She watched some of the show before she even started writing The Testaments.”
