A quarter of renewable supply is in Scotland and there is a lack of grid connections to transport it.

The introduction of zonal pricing means consumers’ bills could be cut by £51 billion over 15 years, according to energy watchdog Ofgem.

In a speech in London today, Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho will also say that building new gas-fired power stations will maintain energy supplies when wind or sun do not power renewables.

Ministers say they are determined to achieve Net Zero in a “sustainable, pragmatic way” that allows Britain to avoid relying on tyrants like Vladimir Putin for gas supplies.

Ms Coutinho will say: “It is clear to me that we have entered a new era.

“It is an age where energy can be weaponized against us.”

Octopus Energy boss Greg Jackson said site pricing would bring the lowest electricity prices in Europe to parts of Britain.
