Experienced hiker Alistair Thomson is found dead on a mountain after disappearing more than a week ago and sparking urgent search

A Victorian man who went missing was found dead on the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory over a week ago.

Alistair Thomson, 64, headed out alone on May 13 and last contacted family via text message on May 21.

The experienced hiker told his family he planned to arrive in Hugh Gorge on May 22, but made no further contact and was unable to check into his hotel.

Police began a search last Wednesday, focusing on ‘Section 6’ of the trail and an area south of it.

They used an aircraft, helicopter, motorcycles and Australian Defense Force volunteers who searched the area on foot.

They confirmed Mr Thomson’s body was found near a waterhole in Hugh Gorge on Sunday evening, but gave no details of the circumstances surrounding his death.

Acting Chief Inspector Michael Budge described the outcome as ‘extremely appalling’.

He said police found him about 90 kilometers west of Alice Springs on the Larapinta Trail by flying a drone over the area.

Mr Budge said police had turned their attention to retrieving Mr Thomson’s body and returning it to his family.

The Thomson family said they were ‘devastated by the loss’.

Mr Thomson served as a councilor on Strathbogie Shire Council in regional Victoria from 2016 to 2020.

The council’s administrator, Peter Stephenson, extended his sincere condolences to Mr Thompson’s family and friends.
