GWS Giants midfielder Tom Green has revealed a wild confession following the chaotic scenes that followed after Buddy Franklin scored his 1,000th career goal in 2022.

Speaking about the Dyl and Friends podcast, Green, 23, explained how he managed to get within yards of Swans superstar Franklin alongside scores of frenzied fans at the SCG – despite the risk of being arrested and fined $5,500.

“When Buddy kicked his thousandth, I was a spectator at that game and kept running,” Green said.

‘We [GWS] played him round 1 and he didn’t kick his 1000th. Maybe he was in line for that, but he didn’t.

“But the next week they played Geelong at the SCG and I went, hoping he would kick it, and he did.

“In the last quarter, when he wanted to kick the ball, I went to the side where they were kicking, and it just so happened that the pocket he kicked the ball from was where we were too. We were ready to go.”

Eventually, it dawned on Green that dozens of cameras were focused on Franklin as he shared his unforgettable moment with countless Bloods fans.

‘I have seen [Franklin’s Swans teammate] Nick Blakey comes in and Ollie Florent… and they’re just trying to cover for him,” he continued.

“I thought to myself, I played against these guys last week… I should probably back up here.”

So he did, but Giants football boss Jason McCartney had already noticed the towering youngster.

“I’m waiting in the middle of the SCG and he texted me because I think that was him [sitting] in a box,” Green recalled.

“He loved it, he thought it was hilarious.”

Green also stated that he has ‘no regrets’ about taking the field as a spectator, but admitted it would have been strange if Franklin or other Swans players had recognized him.
