Greenvale shooting: FIFO killer suspected of killing Melbourne greengrocer John Latorre on mob orders

A fly-in, fly-out killer is suspected of flying in from abroad on a mafia-sanctioned mission to kill a successful greengrocer in a brutal execution in a gangland.

John Latorre, 64, was shot outside his home in Greenvale in Melbourne’s north as he left for work early last Tuesday morning.

His family was awakened by the gunshots and found his body in the driveway. Nearly a week later, Mr. Latorre’s killer is still at large.

Underworld sources believe the execution was so well planned that it had to be ‘100 percent’ approved by the highest levels of the mafia leadership.

Mr. Latorre is said to have been a discreet but influential member of the ‘Ndrangheta, a powerful mafia organization from Calabria, southern Italy.

“This went smoothly… cool, calm and calculating,” a source told the newspaper Herald Sun.

‘This is a professional job. There aren’t that many people who can do that.

‘Without guarantees they wouldn’t have done it. It’s a big job.’

The source added that many did not see Latorre’s murder coming, which he described as a “huge shock.”

He added that the possibility of retaliatory attacks was unlikely.

Another theory circulating in the underworld is that a failed ‘black flight’ cocaine import in 2020 bound for Queensland could be a factor behind the murder.

An overloaded Cessna packed with $80 million worth of drugs crashed after taking off from Papua New Guinea.

Mr Latorre was suspected of playing a key role in the failed import, which caused heavy losses to investors.

He was known to visit friend and international drug trafficker Frank Madafferi, but he had no major criminal record.

Mr. Latorre was shot multiple times in the driveway of his Buchanan Place home last Tuesday around 4:30 a.m.

He was on his way to the Melbourne Market in Epping, where he ran a successful fruit and vegetable business.

A source close to Mr. Latorre said he had felt no threat in his life before his death.

“There was no evidence of any threat to his life,” they said last week.

Homicide detectives are still investigating whether the shooting is related to organized crime.

“There is nothing to indicate retaliation at this time,” Detective Senior Sergeant Danny Travaglini told reporters last Tuesday.

“However, you must also understand that if there are links to organized crime, there is a possibility of retaliation.”

Homicide detectives have gathered CCTV footage and limited their investigation to a four-hour period between 2am and 6am in their hunt for Mr Latorre’s killer.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
