A teenager who allegedly stabbed an elderly couple and their dog in their own home in a “targeted” attack is known to the victim’s grandson, who lived with them, according to police.

Police were called to Mattison Way in Greenwood, in Perth’s north, about 8am on Monday where the grandparents were found inside with stab wounds.

Colin Norton, 81, died at the scene while his wife Margaret, 71, also known as ‘Maggie’, was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

It is understood the grandson may have been the intended target of the alleged attack and had been warned someone was coming to the house to harm him and his family, Daily Mail Australia understands.

The grandson was seen breaking down in the driveway after arriving home and was told the heartbreaking news of his grandfather’s death by detectives.

The grandparent’s dog was allegedly stabbed when he tried to defend them. He fled the house and was found wandering the streets. It was rushed to a vet and is expected to make a full recovery.

Air resources and the police dog unit were called in as detectives plunged the suburb into lockdown and launched an urgent manhunt for the alleged knifeman, 19, who was arrested an hour later three miles away.

He has since been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted unlawful killing.

“Homicide detectives are in the early stages of their investigation. However, early indications indicate that the parties knew each other in some way,” Det. Insp. Gary Butler told reporters.

“We believe the man in custody may be linked to a family member.

Shocked neighbors and relatives paid tribute to Mr Norton and wished his wife a speedy recovery.

Lacey Parker said his “beautiful” neighbors didn’t deserve what happened.

“To my dearest Maggie and family, my heart is broken for all of you; my deepest condolences on the sad and tragic loss of Colin,” he said.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Maggie, for a safe and speedy recovery.

‘Myself and my children are so heartbroken for you all… much love.’
