Social media users shocked after body is found in hunt for Dr Michael Mosley after Mail columnist went missing on walk on Greek island

People on social media have expressed their sadness after a body was found during the hunt for Dr Michael Mosley.

The Mail health guru, 67, disappeared on Wednesday while walking on the Greek holiday island of Symi.

A major operation was launched to find the doctor after he disappeared while walking alone in the sweltering 36 degrees Celsius heat.

Today one body was found by staff on a nearby beach bar after being alerted by the mayor who saw something ‘unusual’ from the sea. The body was found in Agia Marina, about a 30-minute walk from Pedi, where he was last seen.

People who know Dr. Mosley and fans of his work have taken to social media to share their heartbreak over the news.

Professor Alice Roberts wrote on My heart goes out to his family.”

She continued, “The fragility of life is so shocking. I have known Michael Mosley for many years as a TV producer specializing in science and medicine.

‘He was the executive producer of my 2009 series Human Journey. When he started presenting as well as producing, we created several science programs together. And we met two weeks ago at Hay Festival. I can’t believe he’s gone. My thoughts are with his grieving family.”

Author Tom Watson said: ‘It’s hard to describe how upset I am by this news. Through courageous, science-based journalism, Michael Mosley has helped thousands of people get better and healthier. I am one of them.

‘He was a hero to me. He will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Piers Morgan shared the tragic news with his followers on X, calling the discovery a ‘very sad development’.

British singer Nerina Pallot responded on X, formerly Twitter, saying: “Unbearably sad news about Michael Mosley which I think will upset a lot of people. You may have never met him, but if one of his books made you feel better, there will be a part of you that feels indebted to him.

‘There’s a lot of parasocial nonsense here, but this is an example where many people will feel like they’ve lost a helpful friend. Thank you for everything, Dr. Mosley.”

Adam Kay, author of This is Going to Hurt, said: ‘Desperately sad news about Michael Mosley. My thoughts are with his family – may his memory be a blessing.”

Dr. Mosley was one of Britain’s best-known doctors, whose revolutionary dietary advice endeared him to millions of Daily Mail readers and TV viewers.

Known for his outgoing nature and bubbly personality, he achieved worldwide fame by popularizing the 5:2 diet and releasing a series of best-selling books.

On Saturday, a Greek fire brigade helicopter hovered over the spot where the body was found.

Police arrived about 20 minutes after it was discovered – about 100 meters from the shoreline.

A short time later, a coastguard boat arrived and anchored close to the beach, while a small tender with more officers arrived on the scene.

Mayor Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas had accompanied the media to Agia Marina, but was on his way back to Pedi when he looked back and saw something unusual on the rocks.

He then called the beach restaurant and alerted the staff who rushed to see what he had seen with a group of British journalists who had stayed behind.

Police first reported Dr Mosley missing at 10.30am on Thursday and by the afternoon all emergency services in Greece had joined the search on the small island of Symi.

The medic was seen leaving Saint Nicholas beach towards the town of Pedi, along a rocky path with steep sections.

CCTV footage showed him passing a cafe in the town, northeast of the holiday island of Symi.
