Hairy Biker Si King recalls the emotional moment Dave Myers caught up with him on his motorbike as they filmed the first series since his cancer diagnosis

Hairy Biker Si King has shared the emotional moment he watched his co-star Dave Myers reach a major milestone during his cancer treatment.

The celebrity chef, 57, told how he felt overwhelmed watching Dave overtake him on his motorbike as they filmed the new series of their show.

It is the first time the presenting duo have returned to filming their cooking show since Dave was diagnosed with cancer in 2022.

Ahead of the series, The Hairy Bikers Go West, which was filmed while Dave was still undergoing treatment, Si said the focus was on getting back on the bike.

Dave, 66, was treated as they drove 600 miles from Scotland to Devon, in the west of the country, for several weeks.

Si said: “Our focus, and especially Dave's, was to get on the bike, start the filming process and bring back a level of normality for him, his family, for me and for the crew.

“That's what he was working towards and that's what got him through that particular part of his treatment.

'There was a lovely moment on the first day of filming when Dave overtook me on the bike and it was amazing, it was like he's back. It was really very emotional.

'It's a series we will always remember. We are very privileged to do what we do and I think overall this one was particularly special because of Dave's health and his enormous determination and love for what he does.

'Especially to keep doing it while he was being treated took remarkable courage and energy – and adds to why Dave and I won't forget it.

'The level of support and kindness shown by Dave and I all along the way has been fantastic.'

Dave also returns to the county where he was born – his birthplace of Barrow-in-Furness has been changed from historic Lancashire to Cumbia – and it was that connection that saw them choose the west of Britain for the seven-part series that producers and met producers. tasting food.

Si added: “Dave is a west coast boy and we had a blast visiting some of his old haunts and our favorite spots. It was so joyful because it's Dave's neck of the woods, it was amazing.”

In May 2022, Dave revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer and had undergone chemotherapy.

In December, Dave left viewers in tears when he gave an emotional health update during The Hairy Bikers' Christmas Special.

He gave an update on his diagnosis and explained why he hasn't publicly shared what type of cancer he has been diagnosed with.

While much of the festive special focused on his love of food, Dave also shared insight into his recent battle with cancer, including unseen clips from his hospital treatment.

Speaking about the moment he found out he had cancer, Dave recalled getting a call from his doctor while driving on the highway in France.

“I can't remember the rest of the drive home, it was like everything was falling apart around us,” his wife Liliana added.

“It's like, 'Where do we go from here?' Dave continued. “When I first got the call, there was disbelief in my mind, and a refusal to believe it in any way.

“It's the word, isn't it, the word that everyone fears.”

He added that the moment it “got real” was when Dave had chemo for the first time, before it “really got real” when he lost all his hair.

“The first round of chemo was very, very destructive,” Dave said, recalling how an oncologist told him he would be “taken to the limit.”

'You don't realize what an impact it can have, the debilitating effects occur quite quickly.

'My taste and appetite went away, I was bad, you see your weight drop and you have to eat, but it's finding something you want to eat. I had sores in my mouth. I would often fall over.'

“It was hard, and it's hard to see him physically struggle with the effects of the treatment,” Liliana added.

'My hair fell out during the second chemo treatment. It's really quite radical, it's not a gradual shedding, your hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, everything just continues,” Dave continued.

“It was all about survival, getting through one week to the next.”

Later in the special, Dave revealed that he might be getting back on his bike for another road trip with his friend Si.

He said: 'My legs are going, the grin, I feel like a hysterical teenager again. I'm going to call Kingy. It means we can go out together again.'

After his 37th chemotherapy treatment, viewers saw the emotional moment when Dave got back on his bike for the first time.

Si said, “I knew I had my husband back. It was like a miracle had happened because we thought he would never do it again. But he does it.

“I was jumping for joy, not for any other reason, but to see my best friend do what he does.”

Dave's emotional update left many viewers in tears, with some praising the presenter for speaking so candidly about his battle with cancer.
