Headteacher breaks down in tears after ex-student from 20 years ago sends him heartwarming thank you after landing his dream job

A school principal has spoken out about a heartwarming message he received 20 years ago from a student he was teaching.

Mark Dent, the executive headteacher of Cambrai Primary School in North Yorkshire, rose Twitter to reveal he was bursting with “pride” after the former student thanked him for his advice nearly two decades ago.

Mark, whose students range from four to 11 years old, shared an image of the text showing he was the “first person” the former student thought of after landing their dream job as a microbiologist-technologist at pharmaceutical company GSK.

The teacher responded with an emotional post saying “that’s what we do it for,” while admitting he “cried” twice at the news.

The heartfelt post has since gone viral, as many people responded to the comments calling teachers “heroes,” while an ex-student said Mark is an “inspiration.”

The unnamed student said, “About 20 years ago you told me at a parents’ evening that I should do something in science because I obviously like it.

‘Graduated marine biology and just got offered a job today as a microbiologist-technologist at GSK.

“You’ll be the first to find out, because you’re the person I oddly thought of.

“It really stuck with me all these years and I just want to thank you, you were right.

“Have a nice day buddy.”

The father posted a screengrab of the message for his 1,610 followers, adding that he had been “tracked down” by his former student.

He said, “Today I was tracked down by a former student and I got this message.

“The moment I read this, I was bursting with pride and emotion. That’s what we do it for, fellow teachers.’

A former student wrote a sweet note: ‘Hello Mr. Dent. Do you remember Felix? He is now at the Royal College of Music. You are indeed an inspiration’.

Mark replied, ‘Oh my God! Yes!! So proud!! That’s now twice I’ve cried today! Such a talented boy. Please give him my best wishes and congratulations.”

In a similar expression of gratitude, someone wrote: I’ve been at GSK for 24 years, just like the girl who sat next to me in chemistry, the kind of school where most of them left at 16.

“I often think of our wonderful teacher, Mr. King, who sadly died before we graduated. So instead I want to thank you for inspiring our new colleagues!’

“Teachers are the heroes. Society should value them more,” said one.

Someone else said, ‘This is great. I often think about my English teacher and the things she helped me with, she has no idea. So glad you were tracked down!’
