Staff at a Nebraska funeral home got the shock of their lives when it turned out that a woman who had been taken there was still breathing.

Constance Glantz, 74, reportedly died while in hospice care and was taken to Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln Monday morning.

But a worker at the home who was preparing her body for burial discovered Glantz was very much alive and “immediately called 911,” according to Lancaster County Capt. Ben Houchin.

Authorities were immediately called to the home after an employee noticed the woman was breathing and “immediately called 911,” according to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ben Houchin.

Funeral home staff then began performing CPR on the woman before transporting her to a local hospital.

The woman had initially been taken to the nursing home at 9:44 a.m., but earlier that morning she had been pronounced dead at the hospice where she was receiving care and seen by a doctor, who signed her death certificate.

‘It’s a very unusual case. I’ve been doing this for 31 years and nothing like this has ever gotten to this point before,” Houchin said during a news conference later in the day.

“We have not been able to detect any criminal intent by the nursing home, but the investigation is ongoing,” Houchin said.

The sheriff’s office is investigating, but no criminal charges are pending.
