How fringes are the sexy way to cover up

Are you tired of sequins from head to toe and would you never dream of wearing transparent? Well, there’s a new (old) trend that just might be your party savior this year.

Yes, it’s time to shake things up with some old-fashioned frills. From the flapper dresses of the 1920s to some of Cher’s most iconic outfits, there’s a reason why this style keeps coming back.

Both Jennifer Lopez and Harry Styles attended the Grammys this year, while fringe adorned the cuffs and skirts on the runway at Alexander McQueen’s SS24 show.

Because although fringe adds a festive factor to any outfit, it also has an unexpected benefit; covering your potential problem areas while giving the illusion of showing some flesh.

Not a fan of showing your legs? Try Zara’s halter neck dress in turquoise with fringes from thigh to ankle. What looks like a bold look has the added benefit of blurring any blemishes from view.

The Marvel Movies and Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan used exactly this tactic as she dazzled the red carpet in a silver Louis Vuitton dress with diamond cutouts over a layer of fringe.

Or would you rather artfully hide your upper arms? Take a look at the book of 43-year-old actress Michelle Williams, who wore a metallic dress with fringes on the shoulders at the Academy Museum Gala. You can achieve the same effect with the silver cape with fringes from Mint Velvet.

There are plenty of frills and tassels on the High Street. For party accessories, go to Anthropologie. The pink, layered clutch is the perfect complement to the identically colored dress from Phase Eight.
