Huge fire breaks out on building under construction in east London

A huge fire has broken out in a building in East London while large clouds of black smoke can be seen in the sky.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters are responding to a blaze near Silvertown Way in Canning Town, the London Fire Brigade has confirmed.

A statement from the brigade said: ‘The fire is located on a construction site. One of the brigade’s 64 meter long ladders was deployed on site. People are advised to avoid the area while crews respond.

‘The brigade has received more than 25 calls reporting the fire, with the first call made on 0823. Firefighters from Plaistow, Poplar, East Ham and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

‘The cause of the fire is not yet known.’

Following the fire, people quickly took to social media to share videos, as one person wrote: ‘Building on fire in Canning Town, London. It looks like a building under construction. Firefighters are already on scene.”

Another said on social media: ‘Ominous scene this morning in Canning Town but police and fire brigade are present making us all feel safe. It appears that only the construction sites are affected.’
