She recalled, “I went shopping with my son. He had been good, so I thought I would give him a toy. He really likes his toy kitchens – all the fake food. shopping cart from Poundland.

“We got home and I opened it for him. I noticed there was something with the fruit. At first it was barely visible until I opened the package.

“I thought it was a cloth tote bag and put my hand in it, but it was sturdy. I picked it up and saw a knife sticking out.

“I was speechless, I said: ‘Leo get out of this basket’. I couldn’t believe it.”

The 32-year-old said she thought it could have come from the warehouse where everything is packed.

The mother continued: “He could have cut his fingers and gotten blood poisoning because the knife was all rusty and horrible.

“He wanted to get started right away, so I’m so glad I was there with him. Imagine if I had just let him get on with it – it’s not worth thinking about.”

Allie said Poundland had now offered her £20 in vouchers as an apology.

However, the mother said she actually didn’t want to shop at the discount giant anymore after what happened.

She added: “I was shocked and mortified. I felt like we were being fobbed off with a few vouchers when something really bad could have happened.

“I used to go there regularly, I used to shop there about once a week, but now I don’t go there anymore after what happened. I really miss the store for my bath products, but I just don’t trust them anymore.

“You don’t know what’s in there.”

Poundland told The Sun: “We are truly sorry for this unexpected discovery and I know our customer service team has apologized directly to the customer.

“As she is aware, we have asked the supplier to investigate exactly what happened and we are pleased that the knife did not cause any injury.

“We really appreciate her telling us about it.”
