'I join the people of India…' PM Modi wishes a speedy recovery to British King Charles III after cancer diagnosis

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday wished a speedy recovery to British King Charles III, who has been diagnosed with cancer. Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Monday that Britain's King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer and has begun treatment. “I join the people of India in wishing a speedy recovery and good health to His Majesty King Charles III,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted on X.

While the palace did not specify the type of cancer, it said the 75-year-old monarch has begun treatment and remains “completely positive.”

He will postpone his public duties on medical advice, but will continue his duties as head of state, such as essential paperwork and private meetings.

“During The King's recent hospital procedure for a benign prostate enlargement, another area of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests identified a form of cancer,” the Buckingham Palace statement said on Monday.

“His Majesty has today begun a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone duties in public. During this period, His Majesty will continue to conduct state business and official paperwork as usual,” the report said.

The statement noted that the King is grateful to his medical team for their prompt intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. “He remains completely positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to his full public role as soon as possible. “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to avoid speculation and in the hope that it can increase public understanding for everyone around the world affected by cancer,” it added.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden expressed concern and said he would speak to the king. In a post on X, he later said: “Navigating cancer diagnosis, treatment and survival takes hope and absolute courage. Jill and I join the people of Great Britain in praying that His Majesty may experience a speedy and full recovery.”

Meanwhile, sources said Prince Harry, who lives in the US, has spoken to his father and plans to travel to Britain to see him in the coming days.

Charles became king in September 2022 when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died at the age of 96.
