But many supermarkets have tried to recreate the mini egg craze with their own dupes.

That's why we scoured the supermarket shelves to find the nearest dupe at the best price. Here are the results.

Cadbury original mini eggs

  • £1.30, 80g – Tesco
  • Price per 100g: £1.88

Nothing beats the traditional Cadbury chocolate covered in a crunchy, speckled sugar shell.

Cadbury's chocolates are luscious and smooth and it's safe to say they're hard to beat… and hard to share.

Price-wise, these cost more than any other mini eggs, but that can be overlooked because of such a great taste.

We picked up our bag in Tesco as the mini eggs are currently £1.30 with a Clubcard and £1.50 without.

This week we've put together a handy list of the cheapest places to buy mini eggs.

The prices of these always change over the Easter period, so it's worth keeping an eye on the shops for a good deal.

And if an 80g pack of these isn't enough, Waitrose is selling a giant 1kg share bag of Cadbury Chocolate Mini Eggs for £12.50.

They've also been spotted in B&M for even cheaper: £12.

M&S speckled eggs

  • £1.25, 90g – M&S
  • Price per 100g: £1.39
These are slightly larger than Cadbury's mini eggs, meaning there's quite a bit of chunky chocolate in your mouth

I was very surprised by the M&S speckled chocolate eggs.

Of all the mini eggs we found, they actually have the largest weight in grams, but bigger isn't always better.

They're slightly bigger than Cadbury's mini eggs, which means there's quite a bit of chunky chocolate in your mouth.

The outer shell is quite hard, which means a less satisfying crunch, but the chocolate is still delicious and rich once you bite into it.

I think these are similar to the Cadbury originals, but not close enough to fool me.

These are also on the pricey side, only 5 cents more than Cadbury's, but you do get a bit more for your money.

  • Taste: 5/10
  • Mini egg similarities: 5/10
  • Price rating: 5/10
  • Total: 15/30

Morrison's speckled eggs

  • £1.00, 80g – Morrisons
  • Price per 100 grams: € 1.25
Price wise these aren't bad at all, you only get £1 back which is one of the cheapest we've tried

When I tested the Morrisons dupe blindfolded I could barely tell the difference between it and the original Cadbury's.

The shell is slightly thicker than Cadbury's, but still offers a nice crunch.

The chocolate is what lets the treats down the most, but the shells provide a nice sugary taste so you don't notice it as much.

  • Taste: 7/10
  • Mini egg match: 9/10
  • Price rating: 8/10

Lidl Mister choc mini eggs

It was hard for me to taste the difference between this and the Cadbury Original

Lidl's chocolate mini eggs were the underdogs of this chocolate showdown.

It was hard to taste the difference between this and the Cadbury Original.

It's the shell that gives it away: it's slightly harder than Cadbury's melt-in-the-mouth coating.

However, this mini had a very nice aftertaste, but the chocolate was not as rich as I had hoped.

Lidl has not yet set the price for the mini eggs and cannot confirm when they will be in stores, but shoppers should keep their eyes peeled.

  • Taste: 7/10
  • Mini egg similarities: 7/10
  • Price: not yet confirmed
  • Total: 14/20 excluding price points

Aldi Dairyfine mini chocolate eggs

  • 99p, 80g – Aldi
  • Price per 100g: £1.24
These would work well in some brownies or a cake where the mini eggs aren't meant to be the star of the show

I'm sorry to say but I was very disappointed by the Aldi dupe and could tell from the start that these were not the real mini eggs.

The outer shell was pretty standard, I would even go so far as to say it had no crunch.

But the biggest turn-off was the chocolate, which had an almost earthy taste that wasn't addictive at all.

Perhaps these would work well in some brownies or a cake where the mini eggs aren't meant to be the star of the show.

Obviously the price can't be beat, at 99 cents these were the cheapest eggs we found.

  • Taste: 2/10
  • Mini egg similarities: 3/10
  • Price rating: 8/10
  • Total: 13/30
