I turned my shed into a  tiny home and added £30k to my property value – but I regret a BIG mistake

  • Daniel Quirke has been living in his barn for six months while he is renovating
  • His small house renovation added £30,000 to the total value of his property

A man has transformed an abandoned and dilapidated barn into an outdoor oasis, but he made a big mistake during the renovation.

Daniel Quirke lived in his building for four years, while the shed stood ‘abandoned’ in his backyard.

But after he decided to renovate the main home – he wanted to avoid extra rental costs on top of his mortgage – he decided to breathe new life into the barn.

Although he’s happy with some of the choices he made, including the barn’s dark blue interior, Daniel still regrets the stunning renovation.

While transforming his new temporary home into a chic and cozy abode, he explained that he hadn’t taken the time to level the floor.

“The garage is on a slope, but because I was in a hurry and on a budget, I skipped leveling it, which was a big mistake,” he explained.

‘The sloping floor made everything easier to place, just look at this chair [that] to hold[s] roll back.”

Although he is critical of his misstep, the transformation – for which planning permission was approved – added significant value to his home.

Initially Daniel, who documented the trip on his YouTube channel, had budgeted £8,500 for the barn renovation but ended up spending a total of £10,362.

It wasn’t all a loss, however, as the renovation led to his property increasing in value by a whopping £30,000.

“It was way more than I ever expected,” he said.

‘I thought I might get back the money I invested in the property, but when I saw my investment triple, I was amazed.’

The now chic and modern 30 meter garage was neglected prior to the transformation.

So Daniel had to build a new kitchen, bathroom and bedroom – largely solo – so he could save on extra costs and live in the barn.

Although the small living space is fully equipped – a microwave, an adjustable flat screen and more – there is no gas line or even an oven.

Instead, Daniel uses a microwave to heat up leftovers or food he’s about to eat.

Although the fold-out double bed may be a little too small for the do-it-yourselfer, the space has served him well and he hopes to even rent it out in the future.

“I’ve lived here for six months now and I really enjoy this space,” he joked.

The epic transformation wasn’t the only feat he accomplished, however, as the content creator also managed to fit his entire three-bedroom home into a closet.

“It took some time to go from a three-bedroom house to a seven-shelf closet,” he explained.

“But it was something I was going to do anyway at the end of this year when I move.”
