For more than a month, the Biden administration and other Israel allies have urged its leaders to scale back the war in Gaza and reduce civilian casualties. It is now clear that Israeli leaders have, at least partially, followed the advice. The most tangible sign of the change is the decline in deaths among Gaza residents, as reported by the Hamas-controlled local government.

Even as health officials in Gaza said Sunday that the overall death toll since Oct. 7 has surpassed 25,000 people, the number of people dying every day has nearly halved since early December and nearly two-thirds since the peak in late October, data show. The chart here is based on a New York Times compilation of UN reports based on information from Gazan officials:

An average of 151 Gaza residents, including both Hamas fighters and civilians, have been killed every day over the past week. The distribution of deaths among combatants and civilians remains unclear – and a matter of debate.
