New Delhi: Australian legendary opener Matthew Hayden on Sunday made a joke about the on-field umpire during the fifth T20I match of the series at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Hayden sat in the commentary field and was not happy with the mistakes the referees made on the field. The former Australian opener also said the umpire had done his job.

The incident took place when Indian left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was bowling the 20th over of the match during the chase. With just 10 runs required, Arshdeep bowled a bouncer to Australian skipper Matthew Wade and the umpire did not give a wide. Captain Wade was frustrated as replays showed the ball went over him.

“You can see why he’s upset; that is certainly broad. Way over his head. It must also be about his position. He was standing on that ball and it was still above his head. said Matthew Hayden on Jio Cinema.

In Arshdeep’s same over, another incident took place when batsman Nathan Ellis hit the ball towards the non-striker’s end and it hit the umpire’s right leg after taking a deflection from the Indian pacer’s right hand. Hayden said: “The referee has done his job for the second time this year. Look at this. This time it’s the one in the front, not in the square. They are tag-teaming here.”

The bowling attack dominated the game and helped India beat Australia by 6 runs in the fifth T20I match. After their win in Bengaluru, the young side secured the series 4-1.

At the other end, pacers Mukesh Kumar and Arshdeep Singh led the Indian attack after bagging three and two wickets respectively. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi took two wickets in his four-over spell. While left-arm spinner Axar Patel took one wicket.

After the six-wicket win in the fifth T20I match, the Indian side became the second team to register the most wins against a team in the 20-over format. The Indian cricket team has defeated Australia 19 times.

“I thought we bowled relatively well. Disappointing last five or six overs (with the bat). There is always a temptation to promote (oneself), especially against the spinners. My job is to get the team home in situations like tonight. We played good cricket. McDermott has returned. You can’t get tougher conditions than this,” Australian skipper Matthew Wade said after the match.
