Attached to the message was a screenshot from the user’s iPhone, with a G in the top right corner.

The screenshot also showed a Safari page that could not be opened because it was not connected to the internet.

The discussion post, which was shared on the r/iPhone forum, was quickly picked up by dozens of other iPhone users.

More than 80 Reddit users also took to the comments section to share their thoughts.

“Wow, this brings back memories! GPRS/EDGE is actually 2G,” one Reddit user commented.

“Here in Britain that was turned off a few years ago,” she added.

“You’re too young to understand that before there was 5G and 4G/LTE, there was 3G and 2G (GPRS/EDGE),” another Reddit user commented.

Understandably, some people may not know what G means, since the network dates back to the early 1990s.

THE STORY BEHIND THE ‘G’

If you ever see the letter G as your phone’s Internet symbol, it means you are using the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network.

The G, together with the symbols E and 3G, represents 2G, 2.5G (EDGE) and 3G.

Battery Tip: The ‘100% Myth’ That Drains Your Battery

G is generally the slowest internet data transfer speed on your mobile phone.

The network was used by Apple in iPhones before the company switched to 3G chipsets.

Today, most 2G, 2.5G and 3G networks are down or on deadlines.

This is especially the case in countries that have deployed 4G and 5G networks.

In contrast, 5G can deliver hundreds of megabits per second – and possibly even several gigabits per second.

All major US 3G networks would be closed by 2022.

It doesn’t matter if you use AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.

The user in the Reddit post was likely posting from Europe, where 2G and 3G networks are expected to phase out by 2033.
