A QUARTER of children think chicken is one of their five meals a day, experts have revealed.
Twenty percent of primary school pupils think that cheese also counts.
And the number of teenagers who still think chicken is among their five a day is 17 percent.
More of them believe poultry meat is a source of fiber than carrots, according to the British Nutrition Foundation.
Sara Stanner, the charity's scientific director, said: “Government advice is that we should all eat more plant-based foods as this is good for us and the environment.
“It is worrying that there is confusion in Britain about the nutritional value of some common foods, including plant-based foods.
“Lack of knowledge means people are less able to make informed choices and achieving a healthy diet, with a good balance of the right foods, is more difficult if you don't know what key nutrients the food we eat contains. ”
