A popular budget supermarket has announced the dates its stores will be closed over the festive period.

German discount chain Lidl, which has just under 1,000 stores in Britain, will close all its stores on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Lidl has also confirmed that the vast majority of its stores will remain closed on Boxing Day, although this will depend on where you live in the country.

If you head to the Lidl website you can access their store locator, enter your postcode and the handy tool will let you know when you can expect your local store to close its doors over Christmas.

Lidl has become infamous in recent years for closing on Boxing Day, at a time when many retailers remain open to take advantage of the holiday’s famous sales.

This comes after the supermarket teamed up with sustainable fashion app to let customers borrow a festive jumper for just £2.

Lidl’s 2023 Christmas jumper will be available to rent on the site, as will the 2020, 2021 and 2022 offerings – with all profits going to charity.

The Lidl x By Rotation collection also offers three festive jumpers inspired by Christmas pop icons Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis and Elton John.

The Christmas jumper sales service can take the pressure off people who are going to multiple festive parties, or those who can’t afford to splurge on one but don’t want to feel left out.

By Rotation is a peer-to-peer fashion rental app that launched in 2019 in an effort to tackle overconsumption habits and extend the life cycle of garments already in circulation.

And the partnership with Lidl gives customers the opportunity to rent their Christmas jumpers for just £2 each. All profits from the show jumping horses go to the NSPCC.

Eshita Kabra, founder and CEO of By Rotation, said: ‘By Rotation is delighted to be working with Lidl this festive season by adding Lidl’s Christmas jumpers to our shared wardrobe on the app.

‘As Christmas is one of the most important occasions of the year when demand for buying single-wear outfits skyrockets, hiring a festive sweater for your holiday plans is a great way to leave a positive impact on the planet and also save money!’

For this year’s collection, Lidl has also collaborated with Lydia Bolton, a specialist in slow fashion – which is the opposite of fast fashion and takes an ethical and sustainable approach to producing clothes.

Available exclusively from By Rotation, Lydia has created three bespoke Lidl jumpers inspired by pop culture Christmas icons Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis and Elton John. The sustainable limited edition sweaters are made from up-cycled textiles, transformed into a must-have item of this season.

The Carey sweater is ‘all you’ll want for Christmas’ this year, because it comes in a festive red color with an off-the-shoulder cut and large bows.

Meanwhile, the Lewis jumper combines gold, glamor and tassels to give you a Christmas full of bling.
