Shocking moment furious lorry driver shoves 78-year-old motorist to the ground in traffic jam road rage row

Shocking video footage shows the moment an angry truck driver pushed over a pensioner in a road accident.

Mark King saw red when Robert Venus, 78, merged into his lane on the A2 and clipped the wing mirror of his lorry near Gravesend in Kent.

The retiree leaves his vehicle on the busy highway and approaches the truck when the driver pushes him to the ground.

Mr Venus injured his back after falling against the open car door and was later taken to hospital.

King, 63, has now been fined more than £400 by the court after admitting assault.

Medway Magistrates’ Court heard that King found himself in a long queue of traffic in January this year due to roadworks that merged three lanes into one.

Mr Venus signaled to get into his lane, but clipped his wing mirror as he drove forward.

In dashcam footage taken from King’s truck, the angry driver can be heard honking before shouting and swearing at Mr Venus from his vehicle.

He then gets out to confront the older driver.

The court heard Mr Venus also got out of his vehicle and after a brief conversation King is seen pushing him with both hands.

The retiree loses his balance and stumbles back into the open door of his black pickup.

Prosecutor Rajni Prashar said: ‘There was slow moving traffic and its artic [lorry] vehicle was in lane three.

“There was a gap and Mr. Venus indicated to the driver of the vehicle that he was moving into the lane in front of him.”

Miss Prashar added that although Mr Venus had cut off King’s wing mirror, there was no damage to the truck.

“Then the victim got out of his car,” she continued.

‘[After being pushed]Mr. Venus fell back and almost missed the car door… [he] was injured.’

Mr Venus suffered sharp pain from the impact and had to take painkillers and go to hospital due to his injuries.

He has also had difficulty sleeping since the incident, the court heard.

King, from Polgate in East Sussex, admitted assaulting Mr Venus, with the offense aggravated by the fact his victim was elderly and vulnerable.

Lewis Holloway, defending, told the court his client regretted what had happened.

‘[King] wasn’t very happy that night and he had let some people in,” he said.

‘Mr Venus tried to come in and [King] continued to drive, but Mr. Venus then swerved diagonally into the roadway and hit [King’s] vehicle.

‘[King] got out and pushed him. He shouldn’t have done it, but I think it could be dealt with through a conditional discharge or a fine; it was just a push.”

Mr Holloway added that King had no previous convictions for violence and was not at work when he appeared in court last month.
