Man arrested in Brighton, Melbourne after police chase – driver planned to mow down pedestrians

A driver has been arrested in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton after a police chase through several suburbs.

Police began the pursuit in South Yarra and pursued the driver to North Road in Brighton, about 9km north, at 7.30am on Thursday.

The man, 24, was found hiding in a apartment complex on Nieuwestraat.

A massive police presence carried out a manhunt to find him and many officers remain at the scene.

Officers say the man behind the wheel intended to mow down pedestrians.

It is believed the man crashed into a parked car and two police vehicles as he tried to avoid their pursuit.

His Holden Colorado car was seen with damage to the driver’s side door and a Mazda 3 was seen on the side of the road with damage to the front end.

Police confirmed they caught him at 9am.

‘Officers tried to intercept the Holden. The vehicle took off and drove erratically along sidewalks and into oncoming traffic,” a Victoria Police statement said.

New Street remains closed in both directions between North Road and Martin Street while officers investigate the scene.

Several police cars and an ambulance are at the scene and motorists have been instructed to avoid the area until further notice.
