An elderly man has died after he was allegedly attacked during his early morning walk in a popular Queensland holiday resort.

Emergency services were called to Hastings Street on the tourist strip near Noosa Heads after there was a report of an 87-year-old man being attacked at around 6am on Sunday.

The man died on the spot before he could be taken to hospital.

A crime scene has been established around the north end of Main Beach and the area is off limits to the public.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested and is assisting detectives in their investigation.

A crime scene has been reported and witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact investigators.

The north end of the beach is currently closed to the public as those who have parked their cars nearby will be escorted to their vehicles.

Sunshine Coast Detective Inspector Chris Toohey asked anyone with information to report to the police.

“This is a tragic situation of an elderly man going for his morning walk,” he said.

“We think he was walking (when he was allegedly attacked).
