But he played in just one of their four matches before they crashed out to Nigeria in the last 16 this weekend, with his cousin, Nîmes goalkeeper Fabrice Ondo, preferred instead.

And he has now returned to the North West to prepare for tomorrow night's trip to Wolves, where he will weigh up his options in the coming weeks.

Onana informed United that he had retired from international football when he made the £47million move from Inter in the summer.

He had originally taken time off to play for his country after a falling out with president Samuel Eto'o and coach Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup.

However, he was persuaded to return for a crucial AFCON qualifier in the autumn.

That's when he decided he wanted to play in the final.

United and Cameroon reached a compromise that he would stay in Manchester for a few extra days.

He then missed the opening match due to travel problems.

Onana played in the defeat to Senegal, but was subsequently suspended for the final two matches against Gambia and Nigeria, which eliminated the Indomitable Lions.

His return means the only game he missed was Sunday's FA Cup win at League Two Newport.

But United were well covered when Turkish international Altay replaced Bayindir between the sticks.

ANDRE ONANA'S AFCON TIMELINE

It's been an eventful few days for the Manchester United stopper:

January 14 – Onana plays in Man Utd's 2-2 draw against Tottenham before hopping straight on a private jet to head to Ivory Coast for Afcon.

January 15 – Cameroon drew 1-1 with Guinea in the opening match of the group stage, but Onana was completely dropped from the squad after flight problems caused him to arrive late. Then photos emerged of him allegedly being 'calmed down' by El Hadji Diouf.

January 19 – The goalkeeper starts the second group match, but it ends in a big disappointment as his team lost 3-1 against Senegal.

January 23 – Cameroon triumphed 3-2 against Gambia in their final must-win group match to progress to the knockouts, but Onana was forced to watch the action from the bench after being dropped.

January 24 – Reports emerged that the ex-Ajax and Inter Milan player had considered leaving Afcon and returning to United after a blazing row with Cameroon football chief Samuel Eto'o. It was claimed he was blamed for two of the goals in the Senegal defeat that led to the collapse before the Gambia clash.

January 27 – Onana remains on the bench again for the round of 16 tie against Nigeria in favor of Ondoa, but he and his country's Afcon comes to an end as they slip to a 2-0 setback.
