Barkley’s brilliant form for the Hatters has put him on the wanted list at Old Trafford as a surprise and cheap signing.

Barkley, 30, rose to fame as a teenager at Everton but flopped at Chelsea.

Yet he is the boss of the Hatters’ midfield and that is a big reason they punch above their weight.

He helped Luton dominate against United last week and came close to a late equalizer when his header hit the crossbar.

Barkley could leave Luton if they go down.

And while his contract is complicated, there may be a way to sign him for a low fee.

The 33-time England international has scored three goals and provided three assists in his 20 Premier League appearances for Luton this season.

United, which lost 2-1 to Fulham on Saturday, wants to strengthen its midfield.
