Crime News from Delhi: A Meitei family from ethnic conflict-torn Manipur was beaten up and verbally abused by a group of people in south-east Delhi’s Sunlight Colony area late on Friday evening. According to police, a call was received from Kilokari village around 2.30 am last night, informing police about the incident.

When the police team reached the spot, the police team found that a man from Manipur had been seriously mauled in the Sunlight Colony area, an official said, adding that the victim was rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, an alleged video of the incident is circulating on social media platforms.

The video, apparently shot from the balcony of a neighboring apartment, shows a man being pushed onto the street and brutally beaten by a group of people.

The attackers were Kukis, reports claim

According to local media reports, the people who attacked, insulted and abused the Meitei couple were said to belong to the Kuki-Zo community. The two ethnic groups have been locked in a bloody conflict in their home state of Manipur since May 3, which has resulted in widespread violence in the northeastern state.

However, no official confirmation on the identity of the attackers has been received yet.

Delhi Police said a man from Manipur, his wife and sister were attacked by a group of people late on Friday evening.

“The victim, a resident of Jeevan Nagar in Ashram, suffered abrasions on his knees, redness and swelling in the eyes and swelling on the left side of the forehead, police said.

An official said the victims were taking a friend home on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday when some strangers approached them and asked for help in booking a taxi as their phone batteries were dead.

“On the way, they were approached by three strangers, including a woman, and asked to help book an Uber ride to Munirka because their phone batteries were dead,” a police officer said.

While waiting for the ride to be confirmed, one of the suspects began assaulting and insulting the man and attacking his wife and sister, the official said.

“The suspect called a few more people to the spot and they also joined the attack,” the official added.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the law and efforts are on to arrest the suspect, police said.

The Manipur violence

More than 200 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic conflict erupted in Manipur on May 3 this year after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for the status of Scheduled Tribe.

Meiteis represent about 53 percent of Manipur’s population and live mainly in the Imphal Valley. The tribes – Nagas and Kukis – constitute just over 40 percent and live in the hill districts.
