Mason Wood was stretched during St Kilda’s match against Collingwood in disturbing scenes for footy fans.

The Saints star was on the receiving end of a big hit with teammate Zaine Cordy in the first quarter of Thursday night’s game, briefly standing compulsively on the field while receiving medical attention.

After a lengthy delay, Wood was removed from the field of play and the match continued.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution and replaced by Zak Jones with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

St Kilda said on social media: “Mason Wood has left the field following an incident at the start of the first term. We will provide a further update as soon as we can and provide Mason with the best possible care.

“Fingers crossed for our beloved wingman.”

It is the second time Wood has suffered a serious concussion, having been knocked out in a marking match as a North Melbourne player in 2016.

Footy fans flocked to X – the social media platform formerly known as Twitter – to send their best wishes to the utility man on the road to recovery.

One fan said: ‘My thoughts are with Mason Wood. That was annoying and you never want to see that happen to anyone…’

“That was awful,” another fan added. “I hope Mason Wood is doing well.”

A third fan said: ‘Too much courage sometimes. I hope Mason Wood is doing well on that stretcher. It didn’t look good.”
