Baryl Vanneihsangi, a 32-year-old member of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), created history when she emerged victorious in the Mizoram Assembly elections. She emerged victorious by a margin of 1,414 votes and became the youngest woman MLA in the state representing Aizawl South-III constituency.

In the recently held parliamentary elections in Mizoram, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) emerged victorious, claiming 27 of the 40 seats in the assembly, marking a significant shift in power as they ousted the Mizo National Front (MNF).

Shortly after the win, the former TV presenter spoke emphatically about gender equality and urged women to follow their passion.

“I want to tell all the women out there that our gender does not stop us from doing everything we love and pursue. It doesn’t stop us from taking up something we’re passionate about. My message to them is that no matter what community or social strata they belong to, if they want to do something, they should just go for it,” she told news agency ANI.

Who is Baryl Vanneihsangi?

Of the 174 candidates in the Mizoram Assembly elections, only 16 were women. Of these, two were contested in two constituencies each, leaving 18 seats with women candidates contesting the Assembly elections.

The results of the 2023 Mizoram Assembly elections were declared on November 4 and the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) emerged victorious by securing 27 seats by defeating the incumbent Zoramthanga-led Mizo National Front (MNF). MNF won 10 seats while Bharatiya Janta Party managed to secure two seats.
