Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant has tragically passed away.

The eleven-time winner of Group 1 died 'due to complications during the birth of her foal' Racenet has reported.

Trainer Chris Waller said: 'The news is now just filtering down to the stable staff and other close connections who are processing this tragic news.'

“She was in wonderful hands at a farm that did everything they could for her, and we would like to thank them for their efforts for which we will be forever grateful,” Waller said.

“We all saw the courage she had over many seasons on the track, and she will never be forgotten by those close to her and the wider racing public who followed her career and loved her so much.”

Horse racing fans have been shocked by the news and have taken to social media to pay tribute to the champion mare who won the 2020 Caulfield Cup and 2021 Melbourne Cup.

“This is so unspeakably sad…thoughts with everyone closest to the beautiful mare Verry Elleegant,” one person wrote.

'Just terrible news. What a champion she was. One of our very best in modern times. May she RIP,” another added.

'Enigmatic at the start of her career, and a champion towards the end of it. RIP VE,” another shared.

Verry Elleegant was born in New Zealand in 2015 and had a hugely impressive racing career under Waller.

Known for her versatility, she excelled in both sprint and stay races and recorded memorable wins at the Australian Oaks, Caulfield Cup and the Tancred Stakes – along with the 2021 Melbourne Cup win.
