Millie Bobby Brown has a message for anyone upset by her changing accent.
“I’m an actor. I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America. I come here to play and I’m an actor and I adapt,” Brown, 20, said. Max Balleg in a TikTok interview published on Friday, March 8. “I want to imitate people. There’s nothing I can do about that when I’m around my fiancé [Jake Bongiovi] or when I’m nearby Jimmy FallonWHO [both] I have a very American accent, I want to replicate it.”
Brown explained that the way she speaks often depends on where she is geographically, noting that she currently sounds more British because she is in England.
“I don’t do it intentionally and I’m sorry if it offends you,” she added. “But listen, I’m doing my best!”
Baleg, who is British herself, also came to her defense, telling the camera: “She’s Millie Bobby Brown and she can speak however she wants.”
Brown first raised eyebrows earlier this week when she made an appearance The Tonight starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her Netflix film Ladywhere some fans felt her accent wavered between American and English.
“Her British accent is barely present anymore. I know she’s been in America for a long time but omg it was so strong,” one person wrote via TikTok below a clip from the show. Another added: “Millie, go back to England now until your accent comes back!”
However, others were quick to defend the actress, arguing that her accent likely shifted after she was cast as American characters, such as Stranger Things’ Eleven. “You do realize that she also speaks American, it’s stranger things when she plays eleven!” said one fan. “She also talks like that in interviews, because people complain that they can’t understand her accent!”
While on The tonight showBrown discussed her engagement to Bongiovi, which they previously announced in April 2023. She told the story of how he proposed and shared how her fiancé used their mutual love of diving to create the big moment.
“One day we were on vacation and he said, ‘Mil, you have to get up at 8 a.m., we’re going diving.’ And I was like, ‘8 a.m. diving?'” she recalled, recounting that they eventually went to their usual dive spot, and while “many yards away, he hands me a grenade, and I turn it over and it’s a ring.”
After Brown said yes, however, disaster struck briefly. “He puts the ring on my hand and when I go to show it to him, the ring falls off my finger and collapses, so fast it’s like a movie,” she joked. “Jake threw himself so low that he made a cinematic grab and saved the ring. I really feel like it’s a reflection of who he is, and I feel like we’ll always have each other’s backs and if anyone drops the ball, we’ll have it.”
When they finally returned to the surface, Bongiovi rightly asked Brown to marry him by presenting her with her mother’s ring. “It was very magical,” she said.
Brown’s engagement to 21-year-old Bongiovi also likely contributes to her ever-changing accent, as the pair have been inseparable since they started dating in 2021. Although some critics claim that Brown and Bongiovi are too young to get married, Brown has done so. explained honestly why she disagreed.
“We are modeled after beautiful, loving relationships,” she explained Glamour in October 2023. “So it’s something that we both had a mutual urge for.”
Brown noted at the time that marriage was not initially the end goal. “My dream was to have a baby,” she told the outlet. “I wanted to be the woman my mother is to me, and I wanted to be the woman my grandmother was to me. So that was never my intention to be a wife.”
She added that when she met Jake, the son of the legendary rocker Jon Bon Jovi, she changed her mind. “He wants me to do my thing and live my life, and he will hold my hand through it,” she said. “I thought, ‘Oh, I really want this.’ … It’s like, why wait? Let’s go for it.”
