As the traumatized pug’s screams grow louder, a woman from a nearby pharmacy appears with a chair and tries to slam it between the two dogs in an attempt to free the injured dog.

While other members of the group help wrestle the animal away with a chair, another woman tries to kick it until the pug is finally released.

In the video you hear a woman say: ‘Is that a dog? That’s fucking terrifying.”

Police in Scotland said they were aware of the attack, but the dog has not been seized.

They couldn’t confirm the dog’s breed, but it’s clear it’s not an XL Bully.

However, XL Bully campaign group Bully Watch condemned the attack by the ‘XL Bully-type dog’, claiming the owner had ‘no control over it’.

Shocked viewers reacted angrily to the attack, with one writing: ‘These dogs should not be owned by the public.’

Another wrote: ‘This animal is too powerful to be safe in the hands of untrained owners, ban them. And I love dogs, but I don’t like seeing people get torn apart any more.”

Last month a woman suffered serious injuries after two XL bullies mauled her in a vicious attack, also in Leith.

It came after two XL bully dogs killed a Chihuahua and bit its owner’s shoulder during an incident in Glasgow in March.

In the same month, two children were injured in a suspected XL bullying attack in Ayrshire.

Police also shot dead an XL bully-like animal after it injured three people and another dog in East Kilbride earlier this year.

Earlier this year, Scotland saw an influx of XL bullies as owners sought refuge from their pets south of the border.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had imposed a strict ban on the breeding, sale and walking of dogs without muzzles or leashes in England and Wales.

It also became illegal to own an XL bully dog if it was not registered.

At the time, then Prime Minister Humza Yousaf rejected calls to do the same.

But after many people brought the dogs to Scotland from other parts of Britain in an attempt to circumvent the ban, the Scottish government reversed its opposition to the British government’s crackdown.

Holyrood introduced its own rules in February placing restrictions on the breed and from August it will be illegal to own an XL bully dog if it is not registered.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: ‘At around 1.15pm on Monday, June 3, officers were notified that a dog had bitten another dog in the Newkirkgate area of Edinburgh.

“There are no reports of anyone being injured during the incident.

‘The owners of both dogs have been traced and given appropriate advice.’
