Multiple people were shot near the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade on Wednesday, February 14.
“Shots were fired around Union Station. Please leave the area,” Kansas City Missouri Police announced via X on Wednesday, after the Super Bowl parade. In a series of follow-up tweets, the department confirmed that “several people were affected” after shots were fired near a garage near the event and that they were “still trying to determine the number of victims from the shooting.”
Local news channel KMBC News reported that two people had been arrested and the scene was labeled “a fluid situation.”
Thousands of football fans gathered in the city to celebrate the Chiefs' second consecutive Super Bowl victory against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, February 11. Several athletes and staff members from the team were in attendance, including quarterback Patrick Mahomestight end Travis Kelce and head coach Andy Reid. (Taylor Swift was not present.)
ABC news reported that one victim was killed and nine others were injured in the shooting, three of whom are in critical condition. Officials say five of the injured are in serious condition and one has non-life-threatening injuries.
“Law enforcement is responding to a situation in the area of Union Station. Please stay away from the area,” the mayor of Kansas City said Quinton Lucas wrote via X on Wednesday, adding: “To those in attendance, please leave the area quietly.”
Missouri Governor Mike Parson X Page confirmed that he and his wife, Teresa Parsonwere “safe” after attending the parade and rally earlier that day.
In the aftermath of the shooting, one attendee told a reporter that he was punched in the face while jumping over a barricade to flee the scene and that he heard gunshots both inside and outside Union Station. “I had no idea if my friends were doing well. Some Chiefs players shared their reactions to the shooting on social media, including Mahomes, 28, who tweeted“Praying for Kansas City…” Linebacker Drue Calm down wrote, “Please join me in praying for all the victims of this heinous act. Pray that doctors and first responders will have steady hands and that everyone will experience complete healing.”
