At least 10 people were gunned down early Sunday morning in an Illinois suburb during an apparent Juneteenth celebration.

The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Route 83 near Honey Suckle Lane in Willowbrook, Illinois, Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander of the Tri-State Fire Protection District said. WLS.

Witnesses said the large crowd of 200-300 people had gathered for a Juneteenth party that turned violent.

Two people who were shot are in critical condition, according to local reports. Firefighters say others suffered ‘abrasions’.

“It should have been some kind of Juneteenth celebration; we just started hearing shots, so we dropped until they stopped,” witness Markeshia Avery said. ‘They went on and on. After that we were literally blown away.’

Emergency services responded to the shooting near Willowbrook Shopping Mall in Illinois after gunfire broke out during an illegal street takeover attended by up to 300 people overnight.

A massive police presence remained at the scene at 5:30 am and is conducting an investigation.
