It's been twenty years since they were part of a film that changed the landscape for independent film.

The 2004 coming-of-age comedy was filmed on a budget of just $400,000, but proved a hit with viewers, grossing more than $44 million within its first year of release.

Despite featuring a group of relatively unknown actors, the film's commercial success immediately catapulted the cast to stardom.

Twenty years later, however, the lead actors look drastically different and were barely recognizable as they attended the Sundance Film Festival in Utah on Wednesday.

So do you know who they are?

The stars of an iconic Nineties comedy looked unrecognizable as they reunited to celebrate the film's 20th anniversary – but can YOU guess who they are?

That's right, they're the stars of Napoleon Dynamite!

Titular character Jon Heder and Efren Ramirez, who played Pedro, were among the film's cast members who gathered to celebrate its twentieth anniversary.

Heder cut a casual figure as he hit the red carpet in a fur-lined Levi's denim jacket over a gray sweater with a colorful scarf.

The bearded actor also wore a brown leather fanny pack, black pants and brown work boots.

Ramirez opted for a black denim jacket over a black sweater and white shirt with black framed glasses.

The actor completed his look with matching black pants and Doc Martens boots for the event.

The pair were joined on the red carpet by co-stars Jon Gries (Uncle Rico), Shondrella Avery (Lafawnduh) and co-writer Jerusha Hess.

Napoleon Dynamite tells the story of an awkward and alienated teenager who helps his new friend Pedro win the class presidency at their high school in Preston, Idaho.

Meanwhile, he has to deal with his bizarre family life at home.

The film, co-written by director Jared Hess and his wife Jerusha, was shot in 22 days on a modest production budget before premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2004.

In December, it was announced that the film was undergoing a restoration, with an original 35mm negative being digitally scanned as part of Sundance's 40th anniversary celebration.

The work was supervised by director Hess, with all color and restoration work redone in 4K resolution.

“Returning to Sundance with Napoleon Dynamite feels like coming home. When it premiered at the festival 20 years ago, we never expected the incredible response it would receive,” Hess said in a statement.

“It has always been a very personal film for Jerusha and me, so the love affair it has had with audiences over the years continues to surprise us.

'In commemoration of the twentieth anniversary, we are pleased to be able to screen this newly restored version of Napoleon Dynamite.

'The restoration team did a fantastic job bringing to life new details from the negative of the original film that we had never seen before. We can't wait to share it!'
