NEW YORK CITY FC has announced plans for a groundbreaking ‘cube stadium’ in Queens.
The MLS club, which was founded just ten years ago, has long been working on building a stadium in one of the five boroughs.
The unnamed stadium will feature some incredible designs, including a seven-storey entrance clad in 11,000 square meters of LEDs that the club is calling ‘The Cube’.
NYCFC CEO Brad Sims said The Athletics that he thought the unusual entrance would be the distinguishing feature that would help differentiate their stadium from others.
He said: ‘You go through the whole process and you think: how are we going to differentiate ourselves?
“Not only among soccer-specific stadiums in North America, but we also stand out from other sports venues in the New York area.
“I think our grand entrance through the cube will be very different from any other sense of arrival, of welcome to a sporting event that any of our fans have ever seen.”
You also have to stand out from the crowd in New York, with a whole host of sporting venues spread across the city.
NYCFC’s new stadium is expected to be built on Willets Point, adjacent to Citi Field, home of the New York Mets in the MLB and steps away from the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the US Open.
Construction of the stadium is expected to cost approximately $780 million and will be entirely privately financed.
The project would be the first-ever soccer-specific arena to be built in New York and has a planned capacity of 25,000 people.
It is part of a larger development in Willets Point with plans to build 2,500 affordable housing units, a 650-seat public school, 250 hotel keys and 115,000 square feet of open space in the area.
The plans will also create more than 16,500 jobs for the local community, in both construction and operations.
The 2021 MLS champions have announced that they plan to have the stadium completed in time for the 2027 MLS season.
